Living with multiple chronic conditions can feel overwhelming at times. Chronic illness can affect more than just the body. Your mind and spirit can be challenged too. Your “new normal” might merge physical challenges with emotional hurdles. Let’s look at ways to manage your emotions as you tackle life with multiple chronic conditions.
Understand what you’re feeling
Often, we are hit with several emotions at once. They may blend into each other, and it can be hard to make sense of them. It’s important to recognize that whatever you are feeling is valid. There are many ways to make sense of your emotions. For example, you might journal about what you’re feeling. Start by listing the top five emotions you’re experiencing and writing about them. Or you might feel comfortable talking through your emotions with a close friend. Whatever way works for you, make sure to carve out time during your schedule to acknowledge how you are feeling. This can help you to process your emotions more fully.
Seek help
The relationship between depression and chronic illness is complex and unique to the person. But you don’t have to do this alone. Call on your support system for comfort, support or even distraction. Ask your friends and family to be there for you. If you start to feel depressed, reach out to a mental health professional.
If you have coaching as a benefit through Teladoc Health, lean on your coach for tools and guidance. Look for support groups for people who are going through something similar. Your doctor or care team may be able to direct you to local and online support groups. Lastly, if you have questions about your conditions, ask your provider or care team for information. Learning more about your conditions can help you better manage them.
Prioritize self-care
Self-care can take many forms. You may find that you relax by spending time with loved ones or exercising. You might explore mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga. Self-care can also mean getting more rest or quiet time, or enjoying a book or TV show. In today’s busy world, it’s not easy finding time to focus on yourself. Here’s an article about how to prioritize self-care to help you get started.
